how much to fix a garage door?

So try and find someone that is good that will give you an honest opinion.

I recently had to replace my entire garage door and it wasn't cheap, but I don't think your repairs will be as bad. I would call a garage door repair person in your neighbourhood and get an estimate. Maybe call a couple and compare their quotes. Also, good to check with friends and see if they can recommend anyone.

They might be able to straighten and repair the motor. I've had them replace the circuit board on the garage door on my last house and this was cheaper than replacing the whole motor. I think it was $100. I've also had them replace the gears on my existing motor. This was about $150 or $200. When they replaced my garage door he said it would be $500 for a new motor, but I didn't have to replace it yet.

President Michelle Obama? 'Absolutely Not'

"When my husband is running for President, we're right in there; we're serving, too," she said. "And I think that once his terms are over, we'll go on to do other important things - because there are so many ways that you can help this country and the world, even if you're not president of the United States," she said.

"I've done it a couple of times. But you know, one fantasy I have - and the Secret Service, they keep looking at me because they think I might actually do it - is to walk right out the front door and just keep walking," she said laughing. "Just go right over there and go into some shops, and stop and have some ice cream."

In fielding questions from the youngsters, the first lady expressed confidence that her husband will win reelection and that she'll be in her current role for another four years."

Obama revealed that what she most wants to do is "sneak around." Asked if she would change anything about the position of first lady, she said she yearns to ditch her security detail and go for a walk.

"But I can't do that. I can't just up and decide, 'I think I'm going to go for a walk' and I'm going to walk to Georgetown. So if I could change something, I'd be able to sneak around a little bit more. But it causes people a lot of stress when I do that so I try not to," she said.

"One of the things you learn about yourself as you get older are what are your strengths and what are your interests," she said. "And for me, it's other stuff, that is not being the President. So I probably won't run."

First Lady Michelle Obama made clear today that she does not plan to follow in Hillary Clinton's footsteps and run for president after her husband leaves office.

"Absolutely not," the first lady declared today, when a girl at the White House for its"Take Your Daughters And Sons To Work Day,"asked if she will ever run for president.

Montana man charged with shooting teen in his garage

MISSOULA, Mont. - A man has been charged in the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy after prosecutors said he set a trap in his garage to catch any would-be burglars because he was frustrated over recent thefts.

Markus Kaarma, 29, made an initial appearance in Justice Court on Monday but did not enter a plea to the count of felony deliberate homicide filed in the death of Diren Dede, an exchange student from Hamburg, Germany.

Kaarma's attorney, Paul Ryan, said his client feels terrible about the death of the young man, but he was also was disappointed that the Missoula County attorney filed the charge.

2014 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Ryan told CBS affiliate KPAX his client will plead not guilty and will fight the charge all the way.

Court records said Kaarma and his common-law wife, Janelle Pflager, had set up sensors outside the garage, a video monitoring system in the garage and left the garage door open. Pflager said she put personal items that she had cataloged in a purse in the garage "so that they would take it."

Early Sunday, the sensors went off, and Kaarma and Pflager looked at the video feed and saw that someone was in the garage.

Kaarma went outside with his shotgun. He told investigators he heard a noise that sounded like metal on metal, and he was afraid the intruder would come out and hurt him. He said he did not see anyone in the darkened garage and did not communicate with anyone before sweeping the garage with four shotgun blasts.

Dede was a junior at Big Sky High School. He was an All-State soccer player and also competed in track. Monday was a scheduled day off in the Missoula County Public School District, but KPAX said counselors were made available to students.

On Sunday, a woman told investigators that Kaarma had told her that he had been waiting up for three nights with his shotgun to shoot a kid, court records said.

Justice of the Peace Karen Orzech set Kaarma's bail at $30,000.

Kaarma's arrest comes as a man is on trial in Minnesota for fatally shooting two teenage intruders in his Little Falls home. Byron Smith, 65, is charged with first-degree premeditated murder in the deaths of 18-year-old Haile Kifer and 17-year-old Nick Brady.

Smith contends he was defending himself when he shot the two cousins in his basement because he feared for his life after several break-ins. Prosecutors say he lay in wait for the teens.

According to an affidavit filed by prosecutors, Pflager told investigators that Kaarma yelled into the garage, and that someone responded either "hey" or "wait." Soon after, Kaarma fired four shots into the dark garage, she said.

Dede was struck in the head and arm and died at a Missoula hospital, court records said.

Kaarma said he didn't want the suspect to get away and added that police can't catch burglars in the act, the affidavit filed Monday said.

Pflager told police that they had been burglarized two times within the last three weeks. Ryan said.

They were frustrated, on edge and felt someone in their neighborhood was watching them, Ryan said. The couple called police "and nothing was done," he said.

Pflager had made a list of the items in the purse so if it was taken she could attempt to track the thief, Ryan said. Despite the recent burglaries, they left the garage door open, prosecutors noted.

"They certainly didn't tell the kid to come in (the garage)," Ryan said. "He entered voluntarily."

Home Improvement: Remodeling Projects with Biggest Payoff

2. Garage door replacementCost: $1,200

Estimated recoup upon resale: 83.9 percent

New to the report this year, an average garage door replacement costs a little over a grand and can impact your curb appeal in a very positive way. It's an easy way to update your house.

The four most cost-effective remodeling projects (nationally):1. Entry door replacement. Cost: $1,172 (steel) or $3,490 (fiberglass)

Estimated recoup upon resale: 102.1 percent

New doors remained the remodeling project that recouped the most money this year. It's also the only project in this year's report expected to raise home value more than it costs.

Exterior projects, "not only provide the most value, but also are among the least expensive improvements for a home," said National Association of Realtors President Ron Phipps. "Curb appeal remains king " it's the first thing potential buyers notice when looking for a home, and it also demonstrates pride of ownership," Phipps added.

3. Wood deck additionCost: $10,634

Estimated recoup upon resale: 72.8 percentThe deck addition project actually tied with a minor kitchen remodel. All of the top three are praised for how they add to curb appeal, and a new deck is definitely an amenity that can close a sale.

The weak economy has definitively affected upscale remodeling projects.

Honorable Mention:Some siding and window replacement projects were expected to return more than 70 percent of costs. Window replacements are estimated, nationally, at $10,728 for vinyl windows and $11,700 for wood.

Garage Door Repair Do it Yourself

Do screws, metal tracks, garages, door tensions and the like excite you? If they do, well then I am sure that you might be indulging in home repairs too often. A garage door repair entails checking if it properly opens and closes. The things you need are common sense and some common household repair tools. Further, the task becomes easy with the instructions which come with the repair kit and tools.

Things you need - Mallet, level, screwdriver, household cleaner, powdered graphite and lubricant.

Repairing a Roll-up Door

Start off with checking the metal tracks holding the wheels in case of a rolling door for obstacles or blocks. Too much of dirt in the tracks leads to sticking of the door. If the track is damaged, bent or not in a good shape, use the mallet to get the tracks in shape by working on the ridges. This will facilitate smooth movement. A level will help you know if the tracks are in alignment. Over time loose screws can result in shifting of the tracks at an angle which is not perpendicular to the garage door. So, with the screwdriver, tighten all the screws holding the tracks in place. If the tracks are in a very bad condition, well, they would need to be replaced. For repairing a dysfunctional garage door, first clean and lubricate the wheels. An irony is that the grease used to lubricate the parts of the garage door earlier, sometimes hardens in the crevices rendering the door dysfunctional. For cleaning the debris, use normal home cleaner and re-lubricate with a garage door lubricant or powdered graphite. Repairing a Swing DoorThe mounting plate is an important part of a swing mechanism door. So, first see if the screws are loose. Mounting plate is crucial as it fastens and secures springs on the inner side of the garage. If the mounting plate is not in proper alignment, it inhibits the opening and closing action of the door. Check the springs for extra tension. Majority of the spring doors have a hook at the end of a spring that can be adjusted in a different hole. For doing that, you would need to detach the spring from the mounting plate by removing its screws. If the springs are worn out, replace garage door springs. Some More TipsDoor panels undergo wear and tear over a period of time. Therefore, using a wrench or a socket pipe or a plier, secure all the fasteners you can see on the garage door. Pull the emergency handle if need be, in case the door is connected to the door opener. Check for loose hinges, nuts and bolts and replace them with new parts. Take stock of the rollers of your garage door. Ideally you should be able to spin the stem with your fingers with minimum resistance. If they are badly worn out, replace them. Steel rollers would need a bit of oil for its bearings to work properly. It was not that tough, was it? If you did think it was, you can always refer to the door installation guide to ensure that you are not stuck anywhere. If you start doing the repair and feel that it is not your cup of tea, then grab the phone and call a professional. He will definitely get you out of the garage door woes!

How to Program a Garage Door Opener to a Vehicle

Now, comes the step of programing the vehicle to your garage door opener. Once you have followed the instructions on programing your vehicle, you now have to "teach" the car to connect to the garage door opener. You will need some help doing this.

First, you will have to get someone to press the button in your vehicle and hold it down, while someone else has to press the learn button on the back your your garage door opener mounted on the ceiling. (The learn button on the back of your machine will be square if using a liftmaster machine. Craftsman, Liftmaster, Chamberlain are all the same. Their learn buttons are square, and usually are yellow, red/orange, or purple. If using a Genie, it has a button that says "learn button.")The person pushing the button on the machine will only have to push and release the learn button. Do not hold this button down. If you do, it erases all of the programming in the machine, and you have to re-program all the remote controls that you have, and that's not a fun process.Programing the vehicle to the machine only takes a second. When the machine accepts the code, the light bulb on the machine should flash for a brief moment, and you should hear an audible click.

Yep, it's that easy! I don't know why the auto makers leave that step out, but that's really it.

Then, after following the instructions from the manual, you press the button for the garage door to go up . . . and nothing happens. Did you miss a step? Read on to learn about what most instruction manuals leave out: the step of programming the car/truck/van to the garage door machine itself.

I hope this helps, and if you have any questions, leave them in my comments and I will try to walk you through it.

On the back side of your garage door opener is a panel called the logic board (see the photo above). The logic board is the computer or brain of the machine. Most new garage door openers now are a multi-code machine. That means that it uses several signals each time you press the button on your remote control. This is for security, so your code can't be stolen by a code-grabber.

You have a shiny new car and want to program your garage door opener to it. Sounds easy enough. So, you get out your garage door remote control and your new car's owner's manual for the instructions from the manufacturer to be able to program the remote control to the car.

Man Posts Secret Video of Car Repair - Then Gets Sued

A car dealership in Missouri is suing a customer who is alleged to have secretly recorded repairs and posted the video online.

Jim Butler Chevrolet of Fenton, Mo., about 19 miles southwest of St. Louis, claimed in its lawsuit that it charged for 5.5 hours of labor but Dwayne Cooney's video claims the time was much less.

Cooney brought in his 2007 Chevrolet Malibu on Friday, Jan. 31, for a few repairs, according to the lawsuit filed last month in St. Louis County Court that said Cooney agreed to two hours of diagnosis time at $129.95 an hour.

Cooney, 42, told the dealership he needed three repairs -- for the tire sensors, key fob and the air bag light, according to the lawsuit.

Dwayne Cooney is being sued for defamation related to his YouTube video. In mid-February, Cooney published a 17-minute video from his dashcam onto YouTube, called "Dash Cam Video: Dealer Charges 2 Hours to Move Fuse," describing about 45 minutes of work, the lawsuit claims.Cooney claimed in the video, which has received thousands of views, "The airbag problem was a fuse was displaced and all he had to do was move the fuse. I was billed 2.5 hours for the airbag repair," according to the suit.

"We were shocked when this video showed up online and he refused to acknowledge the prior three hours of work in his 17 minutes," said Brad Sowers, co-owner and general manager of Jim Butler Chevrolet. "As a small family-run business, weve got to protect ourselves. This is part of the Internet world. People can say whatever they want until proven false in the court of law."

The dealership is suing for more than $25,000 in damages.

Cooney said he has cameras installed at his home and in his cars for safety, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

We have them in all our vehicles, and they record 24 hours a day for the protection of our family and our vehicles, he told the newspaper.

Cooney and his attorney have not responded to a request for comment from

On Saturday, Feb. 1, the dealership called Cooney to inform him it would not be able to diagnose his car that day, apologizing and offering a free rental car, which Cooney accepted, the suit stated. On Monday, a technician at the dealership began diagnosis of the problem, working 3.22 hours, the dealership claimed in its suit. The technician called Cooney that day to let him know he would need another two hours, to which Cooney agreed, according to the suit.

The task was complex because no diagnostic codes were revealed by the GM tech equipment, the court filing said.

Three days later, technicians finally made the necessary repairs and fixed the issues, tallying more than five hours of work on the vehicle, the complaint said -- though the dealer only charged Cooney for 4.5 hours: $602.32 instead of $668.38 for five hours.

After negotiating with the dealership, Cooney agreed to a further-reduced bill of $553.61, which included parts and tax, the suit stated.

I never disputed that they worked on it on any previous day, Cooney told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The question is, if you did, what did you do?

Cooney told the Post-Dispatch that the dealership offered to drop the suit if he deleted the video and paid $8,000 of the dealers legal expenses, but he has refused.

We offered on several occasions to settle this for a simple apology and a partial refund. Jim Butler insists on suing a former loyal customer, Cooney told the newspaper.

Computer records show how long the technicians worked on the car and that the dealership tried to meet with Cooney "many times" to no avail, Sowers said. The dealership wants an injunction to remove the video.

With the help of the non-profit group, Public Citizen, Cooney's homeowner's insurance company hired a lawyer to represent him, blocking a temporary restraining order to unpublish the video.

"If the defendant has made a false statement of fact about the plaintiff with negligence or actual malice, the plaintiff gets an award of damages, perhaps even punitive damages, but it cannot get an order requiring that the allegedly defamatory material be taken down in the interim," wrote Paul Alan Levy, the Public Citizen attorney whom Cooney contacted, in a blog post.

Cooney, who has not yet filed a legal response, has been summoned to a hearing next Monday.

In the meantime, the dealership has created its own website,, with an open letter to customers explaining its side of the story.

&hl=en_US&fs=1&">&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="400" height="241">

Sowers, who bought part of the dealership from his father-in-law 10 years ago, said the video has not affected business. But he said he is concerned about future effects of the video living online.

The company sells about 300 cars a month and services about 80 cars a day, Sowers said.

"We may screw up, and if we do we solve the problem, and thats why our customers like us," he said.

The world’s most extravagant celebrity garages

Yes, this is an actual garage. But, this garage is so big that it is also used as a museum for tourists. This is the diamond of all garages. When you have so many vehicles in such a big facility that you can make money off of people visiting it, you are truly the king of all garages. It only makes sense, when you are Hamad Bin Hamdan al-Nahyan, a UAE royal family member. Located in Abu Dhabi, this pyramid shaped garage isnt just for show. He still drives his vehicles from time to time, which is usually for special occasions.

Hamad Bin Hamdan al-Nahyan had a garage door repair services custom build this climate-controlled garage, which some tourists have called it a small city. With more than 200 vehicles in storage, the garage door repair services also added painted streets, walkways, a rotunda, and even streetlights. Amongst his fleet of vehicles, there is the one-of-a-kind Dodge Jeep that is more than three stories high. Imagine being the garage door repair services company that constructed that garage door!

Katy Perry divorce: Singer jets out of LA showing off her pins in super short dress

He had arrived in America last week after retreating to his London home in the wake of their separation. It is not clear if he met up with his ex-wife

Katy's appearance at the airport today is only the second time she has been snapped since it was announced her marriage had collapsed just before New Year.

During a question and answer session to promote his new show Strangely Uplifting in Pasadena, California, he said he was dong 'quite well.'

Meanwhile, estranged husband Russell, 36, has spoken publicly for the first time since their separation was announced on December 30.

But when Katy Perry flew out of Los Angeles earlier today, she seemed well prepped to step back into the spotlight.

Despite recent reports that her Evangelical parents have been pushing her to date Christian Denver Broncos NFL star Tim Tebow, 24, they have been in contact with their son-in-law.

Last week she was seen dressed in bright sports clothes and showing off blue hair as she shot a commercial for Adidas.

She has kept a low profile since her very public split from Russell Brand.

Loose Sagging Chain on Opener

To adjust the chain, you simply loosen the nut closest to the motor and then tighten the nut closest to the door. This will pull the loose chain toward the door and tighten it.

If by any chance you have run out of adjustment room (you have tightened the adjustment bolt as far as it will go), it is possible to remove links in the chain. It is also possible to get a half link to allow you replace a full link and adjust the chain.

If this does not fix the problem, you may consider replacing the garage door opener with a new unit. Its possible the chain is not the only thing wrong with your door.

Over time and with use, the chain on an automatic garage door opener can begin to loosen. As the door is raised and lowered, the connections on the chain tend to expand. When the chain becomes loose enough it will hang and can become tangled causing your door to stop. It can also slip out of its sprocket and become disconnected from the motor or the door.

As with all mechanical devices, moving parts are the ones that have a tendency to malfunction due to use. Over time, it is possible that the chain on your garage door opener may begin to droop or sag. If this happens, it may cause the chain to slip out if its sprocket, rendering your garage door opener useless.

Before you test the garage door, make sure the chain is properly threaded through the mechanism sprockets. Then test the door to make certain that the door is opening and closing properly. Make sure you are away from the mechanism before you test it.

On most systems which use a chain, there is an adjustment bolt that attaches the chain to the bracket at the top of the door. This is a threaded bolt with an eyelet attached to the end of the chain, and it will have a nut on either side of the bracket hole.

Most garage door openers use an efficient electric motor attached to the ceiling of your garage. This motor is attached to a bracket on the actual garage door by the use of a bicycle type slotted chain. The garage door remote sends a radio signal to the motor, telling it to either move the chain to pull the door up, or allow the door to go down.

Prime summer getaway season is in full swing--before you hit the road for a weekend jaunt to the shore or pack for an outstanding ocean oasis abroad, better double-check that your home is fully protected.

The Family Handyman is here to make sure you can get away with your mind at ease. Keep the bad guys at bay and out of your home with a few simple, inexpensive, but very effective tricks.

Dont let a burglary spoil your summer getaway this year. Its easy to protect your home and prevent theft by taking a few simple steps to secure and reinforce service doors and windows.

Disable the overhead door

The latch trick! When you go away on vacation, unplug the garage door opener. If you don't have an opener, padlock the latch or disable the door by putting a bolt through one of the holes in the garage door track. This will prevent someone from coming in through the overhead door while you're away.

Bar the windows to prevent break-ins

If they cant simply enter through an open door, burglars will often try to come through windows because most are relatively easy to pry open or break. Breaking a window is their last choice because of the noise. To eliminate this, make sure to lock windows if possible. If you have windows that you dont open, screw them shut. But for the ultimate window security, add strong bars across the window so that thieves cant get in even if they pry open the window or break the glass. Make your own window bars for a fraction of the cost of factory-made bars.

Scare away thieves with motion detector lights

Replacing light fixtures with ones that have a built-in motion detector is an easy way to make your garage and house more secure. Burglars will be reluctant to jimmy open a door or window when they're working under a bright light. Or, you can add a standalone motion detector that connects to your existing lights.

Keep the garage door closed and use a timer

Leaving the garage door open is practically an invitation to burglars, in addition to the fact that its pretty much a storefront window display of your possessions to anyone driving by. But if youre like a lot of other people and tend to forget to close the door, or have kids who forget, theres an easy solution. Install a device that signals your garage door opener to close the door after a predetermined amount of time. You can set the amount of time that elapses before the door closes, or override the control if you want the door to remain open. One more point: When youre leaving for work, dont just hit the remote button to close the door and then drive away. Wait until it closes to make sure it doesnt reopen.

Cover windows to stop prying eyes

To prevent burglars from casing the joint, cover glass so they cant window shop. Use curtains, shades or blinds. Or apply a translucent film to the glass that obscures vision but still lets in light. Plastic film like this is available in several patterns from the window covering department of home centers as well as at full-service hardware stores and window covering retailers. Its also available online (search for privacy window film). Installation is simple. Follow the instructions included with the film you purchase.

Apple Stores to transition from traditional plastic bags to paper in latest environmental move

For special occasions, Apple has introduced various other retail store bag designs. For instance, when the Apple Watch launched, the company used paper bags with colorful rope handles. It's certainly possible that Apple will use a design similar to these for the new bags, but that's unclear as of right now.

While the design of the new Apple Store bags is still unclear, it's certainly going to be a change for die-hard Apple fans that have come to love and collect the plastic Apple Store bags since they were introduced years ago.

Furthermore, the gift cards that Apple has been giving out to customers who recycle their iOS device in the Apple Store have been revealed. A handful of these "Apple Renew" cards have hit eBay, with the seller explaining that you are given them when you go into a retail store to recycle an old device. The cards themselves are made out of recycled paper, as well.

In the note, Apple says that the change will occur on April 15th, but adds that if stores still have plastic bags in stock, they should use those first before switching exclusively to the new paper bags. Apple also tells employees to first ask if the customer would like a bag before giving them one, again looking to limit the number bags that it uses to begin with. The new bags are said to come in medium and large sizes.

Apple has always been known for putting a huge focus on the environment, and over recent months the company has not been shy about its initiatives. At its press event last month, Apple dedicated stage time to detailing its environmental efforts. Now, Apple looks to be bringing its environmental focus to its retail stores. In a note sent to retail employees and obtained by 9to5Mac Apple has announced that it will be moving away from the iconic plastic drawstring Apple Store bags in favor of new paper bags made out of 80 percent recycled materials.

Apple will begin the switch to paper retail store bags on April 15th. You can see the note sent to employees below:

Last month, Apple's VP of environment, policy, and social initiatives Lisa Jackson detailed the company's continued environmental efforts. Jackson noted that 93 percent of Apple's worldwide operations are powered by renewable energy. Furthermore, Jackson noted of Liam, the company's new automated robot that can dissemble iPhones down to their very basic components to then recycle them. Jackson also noted that all Apple packaging will eventually move to paper.

Comcast adds Netgear’s cameras and Chamberlain garage doors to Xfinity home platform

These devices will eventually join nine other devices that Comcast has said it will support as part of its system of home automation and security products it offers its broadband and pay TV customers.

That would also give Comcast an advantage over some of the more DIY platforms out there, which are trying to get homeowners to do all the work, or trying to build out their own installation networks. However, we still have to wait to see what Comcasts full impact will be on the smart home market, since these integrations arent all live yet, and the installers arent putting them up. But theres a lot of promise here. Even AT&T is warming to the idea of supporting third-party devices. At CTIA last week it said it would support the Nest thermostat as part of its Digital Life home automation service.

Comcast expects MyQ to be integrated later this month and Arlo gear by early next year. Comcast also plans to add support for August locks, Rachio home irrigation systems, the Whistle dog activity tracker and several other devices. The idea for Comcast is to start by integrating these devices into the Xfinity software that customers use to control their home so they dont have to switch from one app to another to take advantage of devices they already own. Comcast will also market these products to customers, which is a bonus for many of the companies that participate in the program.

Comcast is adding two more partners to its connected home effort with Netgears Arlo connected cameras and Chamberlains connected MyQ garage door opener system. The Arlo camera is a wireless IP camera that works indoors or outside, while the MyQ garage door can tell you if your garage door is open or closed. It also lets you shut or open the garage while away from your home and can notify you if it is left open.

Eventually if Comcast decides to install these third-party devices as well it could be a huge advantage to both the sellers of these devices and to Comcast. While installing a MyQ garage door sensor involves sticking a sensor on your garage door with double-sided tape and placing a box up on the door opener itself with bolts or (in my case) zip ties, installing things can intimidate people. Thus, letting a Comcast installer put them in, might make a homeowner feel more comfortable buying these connected devices.
